eTA eligibility depends on passport nationality and mode of travel. Always verify current requirements before applying.

Examples of countries that typically need only an eTA to visit Canada (by air)

(Not exhaustive, and always subject to change)

  • United Kingdom

  • France

  • Germany

  • Netherlands

  • Australia

  • Japan

  • South Korea

  • Spain

  • Italy

  • Switzerland

  • New Zealand

Citizens of these countries do not need a visitor visa for short stays — just an eTA if flying.

Why some countries qualify and others don’t qualify
Why some countries qualify and others don’t qualify

Why others don’t qualify (and this is the uncomfortable part)

Countries often don’t get eTA access because of:

  • high refusal rates

  • high asylum claims

  • high overstay rates

  • weak civil registries

  • economic instability

  • or past abuse of visa-free access

" It’s not personal. It’s statistical".

And once a country loses trust, it’s very hard to get it back.

The part people don’t like — but need to hear

An easy passport doesn’t guarantee entry

  • eTA allows boarding only

  • border officers still assess intent

  • people with “strong passports” are still refused sometimes

This contradicts internet myths.
